Snorkeler found dead in water off Laguna Beach
A man in 50s who had gone snorkeling Thursday afternoon at Goff Cove in Laguna Beach died despite being pulled out of the ocean by beachgoers, authorities said.
The man, whose name has not been released, was seen by numerous visitors to the beach going into the water about 1:30 p.m. near the Montage Resort and Spa, a luxury beach resort, with snorkeling gear.
"About two hours later, the same group of people that saw him go into the water saw him floating in the water," said Laguna Beach Police Lt. Jason Kravetz. "Initially, they thought he was still snorkeling because he still had his gear on."
An off-duty paramedic on vacation from Utah performed CPR on the man. When the first call to police came in at about 3:58 p.m., police could hear CPR being performed, Kravetz said.
The man, who is believed to be an Orange County resident, was pronounced dead on the beach.
