A parolee died after he swallowed drugs and was shot with a Taser by officers conducting a compliance check, Los Angeles police said Monday.

LAPD officers with the West Valley Division's parole compliance unit conducted a check on the unidentified parolee about 11:15 a.m. Monday in the 18400 block of Valerio Street, said LAPD spokeswoman Nora Eisenman.

When officers arrived, the parolee swallowed the drugs, Eisenman said. Information on the quantity or type of drugs was not immediately available.

Moments later, the parolee got into a physical altercation with officers, who used a Taser to subdue him, police said. The man was taken to Northridge Hospital Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

The LAPD is investigating.
