Man shot and killed in Compton; baby in same car escapes harm

A 24-year-old man was shot and killed in Compton while he was sitting in a car with another man and a 10-month-old baby, authorities said.

Witnesses told officials that a man walked up to a car in the 2100 block of Wilmington Avenue at about 4:30 p.m. Sunday and started shooting, according to a news release from the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

The victim, identified as Charley Ford, was sitting in the front passenger seat and was hit by bullets several times, officials said. He was taken to a hospital, where he died. The 10-month-old and the other man in the vehicle were not injured, according to the news release.

The suspect was seen running away from the scene of the shooting on Wilmington Avenue, authorities said. An investigation is ongoing, they said.
