Hollywood sign: Submit your favorite photos
The Hollywood sign is getting a face-lift starting Tuesday, with its most extensive refurbishing in 35 years.
Crews will strip the iconic letters of their paint and pressure-wash the exposed corrugated metal before priming and repainting them white, according to the Hollywood Sign Trust. The back of the sign will also be scraped, sanded and painted during the 10-week process.PHOTOS: A history of the Hollywood sign
The sign was originally built in 1929, and read "Hollywoodland" until its first makeover in 1949. Thanks to a fundraiser held by Playboy magnate Hugh Hefner, the deteriorating sign was replaced in 1978.
