Five hurt in Blythe prison riot

Five people were transported to hospitals with injuries Saturday after a riot broke out between black and Latino inmates at Ironwood State Prison in Blythe, an official said.

The fighting began in an exercise yard just before 2 p.m. and involved about 100 inmates, said Bill Enfield, spokesman for the state Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.

Enfield said he had no further information about the injured inmates or the circumstances surrounding the riot. Ironwood houses about 3,900 inmates, according to the prison website.
