Deputy shoots, kills man who allegedly grabbed for gun in Inglewood ER

October 18, 2012 |  5:47 am

A suspect was shot and killed by a Los Angeles County sheriff's deputy early Thursday after he allegedly grabbed for a deputy's gun in an Inglewood hospital emergency room.

The man, whose name has not been released by authorities, had been booked Wednesday afternoon at the South Los Angeles sheriff's station, where he had a "medical issue," said Deputy Peter Gomez. He was then taken to Centinela Hospital Medical Center.

While he was in the emergency room about 1:10 a.m. Thursday, Gomez said, the man grabbed for the gun, prompting the shooting. The man was later pronounced dead.

No deputies were injured, Gomez said.

It was not immediately known why the man was taken into custody.

The Los Angeles County district attorney's office, Sheriff's Department homicide detectives and its internal affairs bureau will investigate the incident, Gomez said, which is standard protocol for deputy-involved shootings.
