Champagne thief tried to run over cops at Trader Joe's, police say

Champagne thief at Sherman Oaks Trader Joe's

A shoplifter who was shot at by Los Angeles police officers in the parking lot of a crowded Sherman Oaks Trader Joe's made off with several bottles of expensive champagne, authorities and store employees said.

Detectives with LAPD's force investigation division are looking into the incident, which occurred about 6:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Police said a man in a van appeared to be trying to run over two patrol officers. The officers were at the site conducting an unrelated investigation into a traffic accident.

No officers were reported injured and it was unclear whether the suspect was wounded. He fled in the van.
