9/11 memorial vandalized in San Clemente
The Orange County Sheriff’s Department is investigating the partial destruction of a makeshift 9/11 memorial on a San Clemente beach on the eve of a memorial service for victims of the 2001 terrorist attacks.
At Poche Beach on Monday night, someone smashed a block retaining wall surrounding the memorial, authorities said.
The memorial is made up of a piece of driftwood topped by an American flag, said sheriff’s department spokeswoman Gail Krause.
She said blocks were also thrown at a solar light fixture and bench at the memorial.
Krause said there was no evidence of a political motive in the vandalism.
“We don’t think it’s necessarily anti-American sentiment,” Krause said.
