Sepulveda brush fire: Mount St. Mary's College evacuating

September 14, 2012 |  4:47 pm

A fast-moving, rapidly growing brush fire along the Sepulveda Pass was causing students and staff to evacuate Friday afternoon from Mount St. Mary's College near the Getty Center.

Security officer Ricky Ball told The Times that people on campus were leaving. He said people he has talked to had seen flames from the campus.

Mount St. Mary's College is just north of the Getty Center, which has also voluntarily closed and evacuated.

Ball said there was no order to evacuate, but people on campus were leaving anyway.

Leo Baeck Temple, which is at the base of the ridge that is burning, evacuated eight Torahs but the staff was standing by to see if the fire would be contained in time to hold Friday Shabbat services, said Abigail Spiegel, executive director.

"We are waiting to hear," she said.
