School bus driver fatally hits 75-year-old, arrested on DUI
A Ventura school bus fatally struck a 75-year-old pedestrian and its driver has been arrested on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter and felony DUI.
Eleven elementary school students were aboard the bus when the accident occurred near the Mound School on Wednesday afternoon, authorities said.
The driver, Joanne Madaule, 54, was making a left turn near the school when she hit Marguerita McIntosh, who was crossing the street. McIntosh was critically injured and died later in the day at a Ventura hospital.
California Highway Patrol Officer Steve Reid said Madaule had not been drinking but was under the influence of a controlled substance that he declined to identify.
The Highway Patrol investigates school bus accidents that result in damage or injuries with students aboard.
