San Diego officers in gun battle with suspected gang member
Two San Diego police officers exchanged gunfire with a suspected gang member Monday night in the Chollas View neighborhood, police said.
The incident began when undercover gang-detail officers responded to a call about suspected gang members congregating on a residential street about 10 p.m. When the officers arrived, a man stepped from between two cars and began firing at them, police said. One of the officers fired back.
When a uniformed officer arrived as backup, the gunman continued firing, police said. The second officer also returned fire.
Neither officer was hurt. And there is no indication the gunman, who ran away, was struck, police said.
A search failed to find the gunman, and an investigation continued Tuesday morning. The officers were described as 10- and seven-year veterans of the department.
