San Bernardino man died in game of Russian roulette, police say

September 5, 2012 |  2:29 pm

A 35-year-old man died Wednesday morning after he shot himself in the head during a game of Russian roulette at a downtown San Bernardino apartment, police said.

Officers responded to the 500 block of North G Street just before 6:30 a.m. and found the man with a single gunshot wound to the head, said San Bernardino police Lt. Paul Williams. He was taken to a hospital but died within an hour.

Williams declined to elaborate on the circumstances surrounding the shooting, but said there were others at the apartment who also were playing Russian roulette, in which players spin the chamber of a gun before pulling the trigger with the muzzle pointed at their head. No one else was hurt.

"Everything lends toward exactly what we believed it was: playing Russian roulette," Williams said. "For whatever the reason was, they were, and he lost his life as a result."

The revolver was recovered at the scene.

The man's name has not been released, pending notification of next of kin. Williams said he did not live at the apartment.
