Pursuit ends with crash, suspect shot by LAPD officers

A man who authorities say is a possible murder suspect led police on a car chase Tuesday evening that lasted more than an hour and ended just west of downtown Los Angeles when the man crashed into another car, tried to escape with a weapon and was shot by officers.

The suspect was taken to a hospital, but his condition was not known, said Los Angeles Police Department Officer Rosario Herrera. No officers were injured, according to preliminary reports.

The pursuit began about 6 p.m. when police spotted a white vehicle that matched the description of a stolen car and tried to pull the driver over at the intersection of Sunset Boulevard and Rosemont Avenue. That’s when the driver took off, Herrera said.

Officers followed the driver -- described only as a white male -- through Echo Park, Silver Lake, Hollywood and other parts of the city before he turned toward downtown and crashed into another car at the intersection of West 7th and South Bixel streets about 7:15 p.m.

After the crash, the driver tried to flee with a weapon but was shot by police, Herrera said.
