Motorist arrested in fatal Fountain Valley hit-and-run

A driver was arrested Sunday after allegedly fatally injuring a pedestrian crossing a Fountain Valley street, police said.

The victim, identified as Harvey Mayo, 65, was in the intersection of Newhope Avenue and Southpark Street around 2:15 a.m. when he was struck by a vehicle that was northbound on Newhope and that failed to stop after the collision.

Mayo was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.

Police said that about an hour later, the driver of the vehicle returned to the scene. Ricardo Gomez, 38, of Costa Mesa was arrested on suspicion of felony hit-and-run and outstanding warrants. A preliminary investigation found that alcohol and drugs were not a factor in the collision.

Witnesses to the incident are asked to contact the Fountain Valley police at (714) 593-4484.
