Mother accused of killing, dumping baby goes on trial again

Juana Perez ValenciaA mother charged with murdering her baby immediately after giving birth and dumping the body in a restaurant dumpster will stand trial this week for a second time, according to the Orange County District Attorney’s Office.

Juana Perez Valencia, 21, of Anaheim, allegedly gave birth to a girl on Dec. 22, 2009, in the restroom of the Sombrero’s restaurant in Stanton, where she was working as a server. The baby, born full-term, weighed 6.3 pounds at birth, according to authorities.

Valencia is accused of suffocating the infant and discarding the body in a plastic bag in a nearby dumpster.

Valencia went to an Anaheim hospital the following day and denied having given birth, despite a determination otherwise by hospital staff, according to the allegations.

Jurors in Valencia's first trial in January were unable to reach a verdict. Opening statements for Valencia’s second trial are expected to begin Wednesday in Santa Ana.
