Man jumps from car during freeway pursuit, hospitalized, CHP says

A man, who led California Highway Patrol officers on a high-speed freeway chase before jumping out of his moving car and off a freeway overpass in Fontana, was in hospital Saturday after sustaining “major injuries,” authorities said. 

According to a dispatcher at the CHP’s Inland Division, the man fell about 35 feet and suffered a broken pelvis, a dislocated wrist, bruised lungs and lacerations to his hands and arms.

Authorities said the pursuit began in Rialto around 10 p.m. Friday when a woman flagged down a police officer and told him that her car had just been stolen and pointed it out.

Patrol officers gave chase for around 45 minutes, with the suspect sometimes reaching speeds of 100 mph as he wound through Pomona on the 57 Freeway and onto the 10 Freeway, authorities said. The suspect was making the transition from the 10 to northbound Interstate 15 when he jumped from his car. 

Officials said the suspect’s vehicle appeared to run over him before he plunged off the connector onto the pavement below. Medics tended to the suspect at the scene.

Authorities said police received one report that the suspect and the woman who had reported the stolen car were acquainted or related and had been fighting.

The CHP dispatcher, who declined to be named, said she was not permitted to identify the suspect at this time. The man was charged with drunken driving and hit-and-run, and other charges were pending, the dispatcher said.
