Man dies in Orange County sheriff’s custody

A 49-year-old man died while in custody in an Orange County Sheriff’s Department hospital ward over the weekend, the Sheriff’s Department said.

Byron Scott died about 6:45 p.m. Saturday while in custody at UC Irvine Medical Center in Orange, according to a news release from the Sheriff’s Department.

The news release provided no additional information regarding the death other than to say it “does not appear suspicious.” A department spokesperson declined to comment Sunday evening.

Scott was arrested Aug. 21 for a probation violation, the news release said. An autopsy is pending.

The death will be investigated by the Orange County district attorney’s office.
