L.A. County probation officer arrested in bar shooting

Approximate location of incident shon in black.

A Los Angeles County Probation Department officer was arrested on suspicion of shooting a man after an argument in a Covina bar late last month, authorities said Monday.

Michael Sanchez, 53, a senior detention services officer, was allegedly arguing with another man inside Katie Jakes Bar in the 700 block of South Terrado Plaza in the early morning of Aug. 26.

After both men were escorted from the bar, Sanchez allegedly shot the victim in the upper torso with a handgun before escaping.

The victim was taken to a hospital and later released.

Using video from the bar, Covina police identified Sanchez and arrested him with the help of probation employees when he reported for work at the Los Padrinos Detention Facility in Downey on Sunday.

Sanchez was placed on leave by Probation Department officials and is being held on suspicion of attempted murder.

Another probation officer was arrested at department headquarters earlier this month on suspicion of workers' compensation fraud.
