Fire in San Diego County has destroyed 11 homes, not 20

The Shockey fire in eastern San Diego County near the Mexican border has destroyed 11 homes, not 20 as initially reported, the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection said Tuesday.

The fire, which broke out Sunday afternoon in a remote area east of Campo on the Campo Indian Reservation, has burned 2,851 acres and is responsible for one fatality: an aging man found dead in his burned out home in the Tierra del Sol area.

Fire investigators are combing the massive area to determine the amount of damage, the agency said.

Nearly 1,000 firefighters worked Tuesday to control the spread of the flames and to put water on hot spots. Two dozen homes remain in danger, the agency said. The fire is 55% contained.
