Woman tried to steal newborn from mother in hospital

August 6, 2012 |  4:26 am

A woman walked into a Garden Grove hospital room and tried to steal a newborn baby by hiding the child in a tot bag, police said.

The suspect, who was not immediately identified, allegedly posed as an employee of the medical center  at 12601 Garden Grove Blvd. and entered a room where a mother and her newborn were resting in bed, said Garden Grove police Lt. Jeff Nightengale

After distracting the mother’s attention from the newborn, the suspect stashed the child "into a large tote bag she had brought with her." She then left the room.

The abduction triggered an alert throughout the hospital, and staff members were able to stop the suspect and recover the infant, Nightengale said.

The baby was safely returned to the mother.

The woman who allegedly took the infant was booked on suspicion of kidnapping. Police said she is not  cooperating with investigators.

Police said they would provide additional information later Monday.
