Possible tornado touches down in Riverside County

Some residents near Lake Elsinore called sheriff’s deputies Sunday to report seeing a funnel cloud touch down near the junction of the California 75 and Interstate 15 about 4:30 p.m. That prompted the National Weather Service to issue a tornado advisory that expired at 5 p.m.

Riverside County sheriff’s deputies were sent to assist Southern California Edison Co. crews when winds toppled several wooden power poles near the intersection of Menifee and Nuevo roads, said sheriff’s Deputy Albert Martinez.  Some structures in the area may have been damaged.

Riverside's Press-Enterprise reported that  meteorologists from San Diego were en route to Lake Elsinore to determine whether the damage was caused by a tornado or by wind gusts.
