Motorist killed in Santa Clarita crash on 5 Freeway

A 45-year-old motorist was killed Sunday when his truck crashed into a tree along the 5 Freeway in Santa Clarita, authorities said.

Anthony Friel of Castaic was driving north on the freeway shortly after 1 a.m. when his 2008 Toyota pickup hit a sign near Valencia Boulevard, according to the California Highway Patrol. The truck then went airborne and struck the tree.

Friel sustained a massive head wound. He was the only person inside the truck at the time of the accident.
