Man arrested in attempted rape of Santa Clarita woman

MartinezA 34-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of entering the home of a 19-year-old woman in Santa Clarita and threatening to rape her, the L.A. County Sheriff's Department said.

Adan Martinez, of Santa Clarita, was accused of entering a home in the 27500 block of Sierra Highway about 5:50 a.m. Saturday. The woman, who was asleep, heard sounds in her home, went into the living room to investigate and found a man there, authorities said.

The woman told the suspect to leave, and he struck her in the face. She was then placed in a bear hug and was told she was going to be raped, the Sheriff's Department said.

"The victim began fighting back, and as he began dragging the victim towards her bedroom, she screamed for help," the Sheriff's Department said in a statement.

"The startled suspect released his hold on her, and the victim was able to run out of her apartment and call for help."

Sheriff's investigators arrested Martinez in Saugus. He was booked on suspicion of attempted rape and burglary and is being held in lieu of $100,000 bail.

The woman was treated for minor injuries at a hospital and has been released.
