Body found off Palos Verdes Peninsula where diver went missing

Diver found

Authorities recovered a body off the Palos Verdes Peninsula on Saturday where a diver had gone missing a week before.

Divers searching for Rebecca Weiss, 50, discovered the body about 200 yards off the coast about 11:30 a.m, authorities said. The individual’s identity had not been determined.

Vilma Causey, Weiss’ mother, was standing on the beach with other family members clutching a picture of her daughter as divers pulled the body into a boat. One of the divers later spoke to an emotional Causey before she left with her son, Bob, a sergeant with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, and daughter-in-law.

Divers had been searching for Weiss, who was reported missing Aug. 11 by her husband, Alan Weiss, who told police that she had gone diving near the Terranea Resort in Ranch Palos Verdes, but never returned. The couple, who have been married 20 years, are both experienced divers.

Friends and family members of Weiss, of Marina Del Rey, had gathered at Rancho Palos Verdes City Hall on Saturday morning to hand out fliers asking for the public’s help in finding her.

Rebecca Weiss’ black BMW X5 and some diving equipment were found near the site where she may have entered the water, Los Angeles County sheriff's officials said.

Weiss told deputies he last saw his wife driving away from their home wearing a wetsuit, authorities said. He told authorities that the spot near the resort was one of the couple's favorite diving spots.

He told investigators that when his wife failed to return home at 5 p.m., he went to the area to look for her and found her belongings on the beach.
