Simi Valley transient held in fatal stabbing of his grandmother

Simi Valley police have arrested a transient on suspicion of stabbing his grandmother to death inside her apartment.

Gustavo Rios, 23, was booked in connection with the Sunday stabbing of his 75-year-old grandmother, Isabel Hernandez, according to Simi Valley Police Sgt. Craig Dungan.

Dungan said police were asked to perform a welfare check on Hernandez at her apartment on the 1500 block of Patricia Avenue around 4 p.m. Sunday after relatives said they were unable to reach her.

“Ultimately, they had to force entry into the residence,” Dungan said. “Once inside they found the victim deceased inside the apartment.”

Investigators had not determined a motive for the stabbing, and Dungan could not say how many times Hernandez was stabbed or where on her body she was wounded. The investigation was ongoing.
