An investigation was underway Tuesday morning after a 38-year-old woman allegedly shot and killed her boyfriend and then tried to kill herself in a Signal Hill home, officials said.

Signal Hill police arrived in the 2100 block of Sea Ridge Drive after receiving a call about 8:30 p.m. Officers found the 59-year-old man shot to death in the upper torso at his home, where his girlfriend, the alleged shooter, attempted suicide.

The woman was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, officials said.

Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department homicide detectives did not release their names.

The shooting is the first homicide in Signal Hill in three years, according to The Times' Homicide Report database.
