Shark sighting causes La Jolla beach closure
The beach at La Jolla Shores was immediately closed Monday after a San Diego lifeguard and several beachgoers spotted a 12- to 15-foot great white shark about 50 yards from shore, officials said.
The sighting occurred about 3:15 p.m. Lifeguards began searching for the shark from boats and a helicopter, said lifeguard Lt. Nick Lerma.
While La Jolla Shores was closed, advisories were posted at Black's Beach, La Jolla Cove and the beach at Scripps Institution of Oceanography.
A decision on how long the closure will last has not been made, Lerma said.
