Marine recruit who died at boot camp was former Army reservist

The Marine Corps on Monday identified the recruit who died Friday at the San Diego boot camp as Darnell McCowan III, 22, of Sacramento, a former specialist in the Army Reserves.

McCowan was undergoing the initial strength test required of all recruits, which includes a 1.5-mile run, a minimum of three pull-ups, and 44 crunches.

McCowan collapsed after the running portion of the test and was taken to Scripps Mercy Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. No cause of death has been determined.

McCowan had joined the Marine Corps as part of an interservice transfer program and was destined to be a private first-class after boot camp.
