Pomona man killed as police chase suspected truck thief

Authorities on Monday identified a 54-year-old Pomona man killed in a car crash as police were chasing a suspected truck thief.

The crash occurred at 5:50 p.m. Sunday at Towne and La Verne avenues, Pomona police said. The Los Angeles County coroner identified the man killed as Jesus Bugarin-Mercado.

Claremont police spotted a stolen Ford pickup truck near Towne Avenue and Arrow Highway and began chasing it. The driver ran a red light at Towne and La Verne avenues in Pomona, hitting Bugarin-Mercado's Toyota Camry. Bugarin-Mercado died of his injuries.

The suspect ran off on foot, but was quickly arrested and taken to the hospital for minor injuries.

Police expect to release the suspect's name later Monday, said Claremont Lt. Karlan Bennett.

Claremont police are investigating the criminal charges, and Pomona police are investigating the cause of the crash.
