Auto Zone workers pursue man who attacked woman in parking lot

July 12, 2012 |  2:17 pm

Sheriff’s deputies in Lancaster nabbed a registered sex offender shortly after he allegedly assaulted a woman in a local store parking lot, authorities said Thursday.

Corey Green, 41, was on parole for another sexual assault and wearing an ankle monitor when he was caught, authorities said.

According to investigators, witnesses alerted law enforcement after they saw Green harassing a female victim in the parking lot of an Auto Zone store near the 1100 block of East Palmdale Boulevard about 6.30 p.m. Wednesday.

When deputies arrived, the 37-year-old victim told them she had just been sexually assaulted by a man that approached her in the parking lot, authorities said.

According to investigators, the victim was working on her vehicle when a man came up to her and claimed to be a mechanic. When the woman refused the offer of help, he “became angry and pinned her against the vehicle and began sexually assaulting her,”  according to a statement from Palmdale Sheriff’s Deputy Robbie Royster. The victim cried out as she tried to fend off the man but was overpowered, Royster said.

The man fled after he was interrupted by a store employee who was walking through the parking lot, authorities said. The employee jumped in a vehicle and began following the man while communicating with other store employees, Royster said. He followed him toward the Courson Park area, near 11th Street East and Avenue Q12, where he lost sight of him.

Authorities broadcast the man’s description to law enforcement units in the area. Deputies eventually found Green walking near 10th Street East from the direction of Courson Park and detained him, Royster said.

The victim was transported to a local medical facility for treatment of undisclosed injuries she suffered during the assault, authorities said.

Green was transported to Palmdale Sheriff Station, where he is being held on suspicion of attempted rape, penetration with a foreign object and sexual battery, Royster said. Authorities later learned Green is a registered sex offender who is on active parole and has to wear an ankle monitor as the result of another sexual assault. He is being held without bail due to his parole status and is scheduled to be arraigned Friday, Royster said.
