Demonstrators continued to throw rocks and bottles at LAPD officers as police and protesters squared off in downtown L.A. late Thursday. There were reports that at least one officer had been injured.

The confrontation between LAPD officers and a group of people in downtown Los Angeles during the monthly ArtWalk on Thursday night apparently grew out of a planned event involving drawing pictures with sidewalk chalk, witnesses said.

The event grew rowdy as people began drinking in the streets and breaking glass bottles, witnesses said. Protesters allied with the Occupy movement began chanting, "Whose streets? Our streets!" and yelling expletives about police. Drawings of pigs with the words "kill cops" were written on the ground.

LAPD officers formed a line on Spring and 5th streets as protesters blocked streets and refused to disperse. At least 12 arrests have been made, and police have set up a command post at 5th and Spring.
