I-805 reopened in San Diego; man threatening suicide surrenders

The southbound lanes of Interstate 805 through San Diego, closed for nearly nine hours because of a man threatening suicide, have been reopened, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The closure was ordered during rush-hour Tuesday when a man was spotted sitting on a catwalk beneath a freeway sign attached to an overpass. For hours, police negotiators and family members urged the man to end his threat.

The backup stretched for miles as vehicles were re-routed onto surface streets.

At about 2 a.m., the man, described as in his 60s, was talked into surrendering.
