Inglewood man killed while looking for vandals
Inglewood police were looking Monday for a gunman who shot and killed a man in a wheelchair whose home was being vandalized.
Sergio Velez, 49, was found shot in the head and upper torso Sunday about 2:20 a.m. on the 900 block of South Osage Avenue, police said.
His wife, Elsy Velez, told CBS2 through a translator that her wheelchair-bound husband was especially vulnerable. She was sleeping when vandals threw flower pots through the windows "and things were landing all over their heads."
Velez then left the home to look for the vandals, family members told police. He was pronounced dead at the scene, officials said.
The shooting marks the seventh homicide this year in Inglewood, according to The Times' database Homicide Report.
Anyone with information is asked to call Inglewood police at (310) 412-5240 or the 24-hour anonymous hot line number at (888) 412-7463.
