Grass fire along 71 Freeway by Prado Basin grows to 60 acres

A grass fire near the Prado Basin broke out around 3 p.m. Wednesday

A grass fire that broke out along the 71 Freeway near Prado Basin in Riverside County had grown to about 60 acres Wednesday night but was expected to be fully contained in the morning, officials said.

Earlier Wednesday, the blaze snarled rush-hour traffic on the 71 and 91 freeways after breaking out shortly before 3 p.m. At that point, flames had charred about 20 acres.

About 150 firefighters and two water-dropping helicopters battled the fire, which was 75% contained Wednesday night, according to the Riverside County Fire Department.

Crews were expected to work through the night, mopping up hotspots and digging a break around the perimiter, fire officials said. No injuries were reported.

The cause was under investigation.
