El Cajon police shoot woman pointing shotgun at officer

An El Cajon police officer shot an apparently emotionally distraught 35-year-old woman who pointed a shotgun at him Sunday, police said.

The woman had called police and offered to turn in the weapon. But negotiations between the woman and an officer and then a crisis counselor failed.

The woman, identified as Jamie Fitzgerald, was apparently shot three times as she pointed the shotgun at the officer, police said. She was taken to the hospital; her condition is unknown.

The officer was described as a 23-year veteran of the Police Department.
