Dozens of inmates brawl in downtown L.A. jail
Dozens of inmates squared off along racial lines and brawled Wednesday afternoon at a downtown Los Angeles jail, authorities confirmed.
Seventy-five inmates were involved in the brawl. Los Angeles County sheriff's spokesman Steve Whitmore said three inmates were taken to the hospital with moderate injuries. A news release from the Los Angeles Fire Department put the tally at a dozen injured, none life-threatening.
Deputies, none of whom were injured, quelled the disturbance with pepper spray and sting balls.
The melee at Twin Towers Jail kicked off about 3:30 p.m. and ended after 10 minutes, Whitmore said.
Disturbances at that facility, and the neighboring Men's Central Jail, are not uncommon. Deputies are still investigating what caused this one.
