Autopsy pending for woman found dead near Vernon railroad tracks

An autopsy was pending Tuesday for a 24-year-old woman found dead near railroad tracks in Vernon.

The woman, identified by coroner's officials as Los Angeles resident Maria Castaneda, was discovered by a passerby about 7:30 a.m. Monday in the 4600 block of Fruitland Avenue, said Vernon police Lt. Jerry Winegar.

Authorities said the woman had a "penetrating" head wound and they were investigating the death as a homicide.

The tracks, located along a railroad "spur" used for deliveries to commercial buildings, are not used for through-traffic, Winegar told City News Service.

Police ask anyone with information to call (323) 587-5171.
