Soldier from California killed in Afghanistan

A U.S. Army soldier from California was among six soldiers killed in Afghanistan when their unit was hit by an improvised explosive device, the Department of Defense announced Wednesday.

Pfc. Alejandro Pardo, 21, from Porterville in the San Joaquin Valley, was killed Sunday in Wardak province. He was assigned to the 978th Military Police Company, 93rd Military Police Battalion, from Fort Bliss, Texas.

As a high-school student, Pardo played the cello and was active in his church, according to a report in the Fresno Bee. "He was an All-American kid," a friend from the same youth church group told the newspaper.
