Police look for suspect who killed 1-year-old boy, injured father

Investigators were continuing their search for a suspect who fatally shot a 1-year-old boy and injured his father in Watts
Investigators were continuing their search today for a suspect who fatally shot a 1-year-old boy and injured his father late Monday in Watts.

The father, who is in his 20s, was cradling the boy in his arms on a sidewalk near 105th and Hickory streets when a man on a bike opened fire about 7:50 p.m., the Los Angeles Police Department said.

The boy was taken to a hospital, where he underwent emergency surgery. He died around 11 p.m., police said.

Investigators were looking into whether a gang rivalry led to the shooting that also left the child's father wounded.  He was listed in stable condition, the LAPD said.

Police said the area last year suffered a rash of shootings between a Latino gang and an African American gang that left several people dead.

The attacker in Monday's incident was described as black, police said, and the victims were Latino.

Gang detectives from the LAPD's Southeast Division were investigating the shooting. No arrests had been made as of early this morning.
