Swimmer dies off Newport Beach

A swimmer died after swimming off Newport Beach after lifeguards pulled him to shore, according to the Orange County coroner's office.

Tony Castleman, 59, of Tucson, Ariz., died at Hoag Hospital after firefighters took him there in serious condition, the Daily Pilot reported.

Lifeguards received a report around 8:33 a.m. Wednesday of a distressed swimmer near 15th Street, according to the Newport Beach Fire Department.

The lifeguards pulled Castleman to shore after two surfers propped him onto their surfboards until authorities could arrive, firefighters said.
