Sheriff's deputy gets jail time for stealing drugs from suspect
A Los Angeles County sheriff's deputy was sentenced Monday to six months in jail after he admitted to stealing drugs from a suspect he arrested while on patrol, a Sheriff’s Department spokesman said.
Deputy Rafael Zelaya was new to the department's East Los Angeles Station at the time of the incident. He was on routine patrol when he made the stop.
After officials got a tip, they launched an investigation, finding the hashish and marijuana at the deputy’s home, department spokesman Steve Whitmore said.
Zelaya resigned from the department after pleading guilty to felony charges of receiving stolen property and filing a false police report, Whitmore said.
