19-car pileup closes southbound 14 Freeway near Acton

An accident involving 19 cars and a big rig carrying at least 25 tons of sand forced the closure Tuesday of the southbound 14 Freeway and two lanes on the northbound side, the CHP said.

Mark Savage of Los Angeles County fire said 15 people were injured, two critically. About 50 firefighters were on scene near Acton and were transferring people to the hospital in order of the seriousness of their injuries.

The accident near the Escondido Canyon Road exit started around 10:09 a.m. according to CHP Officer Monica Posada. She said officers are working to extract at least one person from a vehicle, but could provide not additional details.
