The boy, who was 11 or 12 years old, was taken into custody early Tuesday morning after officers went to his home and found the weapon in his backpack, the Culver City Police Department said.

"The gun was unloaded," Lt. Ron Iizuka told The Times.

He said police were alerted Monday night by a parent, who told authorities that her son saw the boy with the gun at school.

It was not immediately clear whether the child pointed the gun at anyone at school or who owned the weapon.
