A 53-year-old man was killed in North Hills early Friday when the bicycle he was riding was hit by a sport utility vehicle whose driver fled, police said.

The hit-and-run collision occurred about 2 a.m. near the intersection of Nordhoff Street and Gaviota Avenue, said Sgt. William Kelly of the Los Angeles Police Department's Valley Traffic Division. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

Both the bicyclist and motorist were headed east on Nordhoff, Kelly said. Witnesses told police the victim struck the windshield of the vehicle, which was described as a dark-colored Ford or Chevrolet.

The victim's name was withheld pending notification of next of kin.
