Shooting of 1-year-old in Watts may be gang-related, LAPD says

June 4, 2012 | 10:37 pm

Baby was shot in this area in Watts, LAPD says.
Los Angeles police Monday night were investigating whether a gang rivalry led to a shooting that left a father and his 1-year-old child wounded.

The child was in extremely critical condition and undergoing surgery late Monday. The father was in stable condition, the Los Angeles Police Department said.

The father, in his 20s, was cradling the child in his arms on a sidewalk near 105th and Hickory streets when the assailant on a bike opened fire about 7:50 p.m. Monday, police said.

Police said the area suffered a rash of shootings last year between a Latino and African American gang that left several people dead.

The attacker in Monday's incident was described as black, police said, and the victims were Latino.

Gang detectives from the LAPD's Southeast Division were investigating the shooting.
