1-year-old dies after he and his father are shot in Watts

June 4, 2012 | 11:24 pm

Watts homicides.
A 1-year-old boy died late Monday after he and his father were shot in Watts by an attacker on a bike, police said.

The boy was taken to a hospital, where emergency personnel performed surgery to try and save him. He died around 11 p.m, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

Police on Monday night were investigating whether a gang rivalry led to the shooting that also left the child's father wounded.  He was in stable condition, the LAPD said.

The father, who is in his 20s, was cradling the boy in his arms on a sidewalk near 105th and Hickory streets when an assailant on a bike opened fire about 7:50 p.m., police said.

Police said the area suffered a rash of shootings last year between a Latino and African American gang that left several people dead.

The attacker in Monday's incident was described as black, police said, and the victims were Latino.

Gang detectives from the LAPD's Southeast Division were investigating the shooting.
