Soldier from Central California killed in Afghanistan

FlagA U.S. Army soldier from the Central Valley of California has been killed in combat in Afghanistan, the Department of Defense announced Friday.

Sgt. Jose Rodriguez, 22, of Gustine in Merced County died Tuesday from wounds suffered from enemy small-arms fire in Kandahar province. 

Rodriguez was assigned to the 4th Battalion, 23rd Infantry Regiment, 2nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division at Joint Base Lewis-McChord in Washington. He was on his second deployment to Afghanistan.
