Vandals topple about 40 headstones at Modesto cemeteries

May 15, 2012 |  4:43 pm

Vandals toppled as many as 40 headstones – including some that were handcarved and more than 100 years old – at three Modesto cemeteries.

The vandalism occurred sometime between Sunday evening and Monday morning, according to Modesto's Citizens' Cemetery. Headstones and monuments were rocked back and forth until they broke off from their bases. The damage is estimated at $150,000.

Many of the older headstones are handcarved and irreplaceable, officials said.

St. Stanislaus Catholic Cemetery and Acacia Memorial Park were also hit.

Citizens' Cemetery is a nonprofit cemetery and doesn't have the money, equipment or staff needed for repairs.
