Two San Diego Harbor Police officers hurt by green laser

Two San Diego Harbor Police officers suffered eye irritation when someone aimed a green laser at them while they were on patrol in San Diego Bay, officials said Monday.

One officer was momentarily blinded and had to take several days to recuperate with possible burns to her retinas. The other suffered a burning sensation in his eyes.

The laser is thought to have been aimed at the Harbor Police vessel from land.

Harbor Police Assistant Chief Mark Stainbrook said it may have been done innocently by an amateur astronomer using a laser to point out features on last week's "big moon." The incident occurred Friday night.

"I don't think people realize these green lasers can hurt people's eyes," he said.

Anyone with information is asked to call (619) 686-8000.
