Teen mom allegedly tried to kill newborn baby

A Stanislaus County teenager has been charged with attempted murder for allegedly trying to kill her newborn daughter.

"The suspect admitted to trying to give the baby rat poison, also hitting it with a purse," said Modesto police Lt. Jeremy Young.

Cashel Phin, 18, of Modesto is being held in lieu of $1.6 million bail. Authorities said the investigation began when a friend of Phin’s heard her say she had put the infant, who was born April 13, in a trash can.

The baby, Anna, is currently in the care of Phin’s sister, Jen Chung.

“We are glad Anna is with us and she is safe,” Chung told Fox40 in Sacramento.

Chung said the family knew that Phin, a Modesto High School student, was having some issues following the birth, but they never believed she would harm Anna.
